Choosing an automotive high-voltage cable starts with the electrical system and the installation. Two names that often appear on a shortlist are FHL2G and FHLR2GCB2G. Both feature in HB Cables’ automotive HV range, but their construction makes them different starting points for a vehicle harness.
The key question is whether the application requires a metallic screen. Once that is established, the conductor size, operating conditions and connector requirements still need checking against the exact cable.
What is the main difference?
FHL2G 200-U is an unscreened single-core automotive high-voltage cable. FHLR2GCB2G 200-S is a screened single-core type for applications requiring electromagnetic shielding. HB Cables lists both constructions on its automotive high-voltage cable page. [1]
| Selection point | FHL2G 200-U | FHLR2GCB2G 200-S |
|---|---|---|
| Basic construction | Unscreened single-core | Screened single-core |
| First question | Does the vehicle specification permit an unscreened connection? | What screening and termination does the vehicle specification require? |
| Before ordering | Check the exact size, rating, dimensions and connector | Check those details plus screen construction and termination |
LEONI’s current manufacturer information confirms that its automotive HV portfolio includes screened and unscreened designs, with insulation materials selected around the required temperature resistance. A family name alone therefore does not define every electrical, mechanical or environmental property. [2]
Start with the vehicle’s EMC requirement
Electromagnetic compatibility, or EMC, concerns how electrical equipment operates alongside other equipment without unacceptable interference. TE Connectivity identifies shielding as a means of reducing electromagnetic interference in automotive data and power connections. [3]
For an enquiry, the useful starting point is the vehicle or equipment specification. Does it require a screened connection? Is there an approved cable reference? Has the harness designer already selected a connector system?
Where screening is specified, FHLR2GCB2G is the relevant family to investigate. Where an unscreened design is permitted, FHL2G may be a suitable candidate. Neither decision should be made from conductor size or appearance alone.
Check the connector at the same time
Treat the cable and its termination as one selection exercise. TE’s high-voltage assembly portfolio includes shielded connections, contact and shield crimp technology, and system integration for vehicle harnesses. That makes termination detail a practical part of the initial discussion. [4]
Ask for the connector reference and its permitted cable dimensions, conductor construction and screen preparation requirements. For a screened design, confirm how the screen is connected within the assembly.
A useful cable enquiry includes both the cable specification and the connector drawing. This gives the supplier a clearer brief than a request for “orange EV cable” in a particular cross-section.
Compare the exact versions
LEONI lists applications across its HV portfolio including inverter-to-motor connections, battery connections, onboard chargers and ancillary equipment. It also describes different insulation materials and copper or aluminium conductor options. These are portfolio choices, rather than properties shared by every cable. [5]
Before approving a particular FHL2G or FHLR2GCB2G reference, review:
- System voltage and the required cable voltage rating.
- Continuous current, peak duty and installation conditions.
- Ambient temperature and the applicable temperature rating.
- Outside diameter, bend requirements and available routing space.
- Conductor material, stranding and termination compatibility.
- Required OEM specification, test evidence and approval status.
Avoid transferring a rating from one datasheet to another size or construction without confirmation.
Build a shortlist with HB Cables
Use the cable finder to explore FHL2G references or FHLR2GCB2G references, then send HB Cables the exact requirement for review.
Include the cable or drawing reference, cross-section, required length, screening requirement, connector details and intended application. Add your prototype quantities and expected production demand where known.
Contact HB Cables to discuss the technical details, current availability and supply options before placing an order.
